New Features for 2002

There is always something new to see at the Anglesey Sea Zoo.

For 2002 we are currently planning new exhibits and activities for all the family.  Watch this space for further information!

Favourite Features

Pier Tank
Piers have been built at many of Britain's seaside resorts.  Here at Anglesey Sea Zoo we have re-created this environment using some of the old posts from the restoration of Bangor pier. Some of these posts are over 100 years old.

The posts act as support for many small invertebrates and provide the recreation of calm sea conditions and provide shelter for many species of fish.

See if you can spot the massive brill and turbot as they camouflage themselves against the seabed.

Lobsters Lair
Living a solitary life for 70 years or more, lobsters remain hidden in caves during the day with only their large claws in view.  Put your head into the bubble window and come eye to eye with this underwater cannibal.

Bone Free Zone
Of the huge variety of animals found in the world's oceans, approximately 95% have no back bone and are known as invertebrates.

Explore our main invertebrate tank with an array of species found in the Menai Strait.  See how many different animals you can find, from anemones, shrimps and sea cucumbers to starfish.

Lobster Hatchery/Breeding and Conservation
Anglesey Sea Zoo is committed to marine conservation and at present is active in two main projects: our lobster hatchery and seahorse conservation projects.

Lobster populations around the coast of Britain have suffered from over fishing.  At Anglesey Sea Zoo we bred lobsters to release around the coast of Anglesey in an effort to help the local populations to recover from over fishing.  See the different states in the lobsters' growth and learn about their life cycle.

The huge world trade in both live and dead seahorses threatens the existence of some species.  Here at Anglesey Sea Zoo, in association with other organisations, we have established a breeding project to try to assist in halting their decline.

The Wreck
The rocky isle of Anglesey is famous for the number of wrecks to be found in the surrounding coastal waters. There are more than 400 of these littering the sea bed off it's shores.

Inside the Zoo you can come aboard the wreck of the IV Sisters and explore below deck to spot its mysterious inhabitants with creatures such as conger eels, tadpole fish and giant starfish.

Cod 'N' Ships
Fish that belong to the cod family are probably the best known because of their commercial value.  Fully grown cod have a heavy built body and can reach one and a half metres in length and weigh up to 50 kilos. In 1996, 76,000 tones of cod worth £70 million, was landed with U.K. waters alone.

Crashing Waves
The power of waves is immense.  Look beneath the pounding waves and you'll be surprised to see the fish and crabs who make their home amid the turbulent waves. Watch you don't get wet!

Shark Pool
Stop and watch our most common sharks swim underneath you as you walk towards our biggest tank.  You may even be lucky enough to see their egg cases 'mermaid's purses' recently laid.

Big Fish Forest
A single piece of curved acrylic almost 5.5 metres long enables visitors to step into a beautifully recreated section of Anglesey's undersea coastline. Through one of Britain's biggest single underwater windows you can see rocky reefs towering around the edges, providing ledges and nooks for smaller fish to hide, and carefully concealed pipework throughout provides irregular currents to simulate the effects of tide and wave. As fascinating creatures such as flat-fish, bass, ballan wrasse glide effortlessly by, take a moment to relax and enjoy the tranquility. You'll think you're standing on the seabed - except that you won't get wet!

Pick up a Pearl
Feeling lucky?  Pick an oyster from our pearls tank and have it opened in front of your eyes.  Each one is guaranteed to contain at least one pearl.  Our trained staff will set your pearl in 9ct gold or silver jewellery of your choice ranging from £10.45.

This is also the place to buy beautiful freshwater pearl necklaces too.

Sea Zoo Gift Shop
Whether you're spending a little pocket money or searching for that extra special memory of Anglesey, we have a wide range of gifts.  There are books, ceramics, recycled glassware, soft toys,  postcards, greetings cards and stationery.  Where else on Anglesey could you buy fish made out of chocolate, fish to tell your future and fish that sing?!

There's also the opportunity to buy Anglesey Sea Salt - Halen Môn (and see it being harvested, too), together with the whole range of desirable, hand-made saltcellars in glass, wood and slate.

Blue Island Coffee Shop (Taste of Wales inspected)
Relax under the palm tree in our tropical-themed Coffee Shop, whatever the weather's doing outside. Choose from homemade soups, and sandwiches with a tempting array of homemade cakes and fudge to indulge in. After all, you are on holiday!

Other Features

There's plenty to occupy you with outside too - an excellent adventure playground on a  sea of bark, aqua blaster water pistols and radio-controlled model boats.

During the summer there are go-karts for your tiddlers (up to 9 years old, small extra charge).

Guide dogs are welcome in the Sea Zoo and other dogs are offered sheltered facilities outdoors, to save leaving them in hot cars.
